Imagine, if you would, a land of make-believe…. a land where the uncommon can be expected, where the unexpected is commonplace. This is the land inhabited by the creative forces behind The Little Theatre of Danville, Inc. (also known as Danville Little Theatre, or "DLT", which has provided theatrical magic for audiences in the Danville, Virginia area for over half a century. While The Little Theatre of Danville can trace its roots back to the late 1930s, the theatre group counts its actual “birth” from 1948, when it was incorporated. The first production was Our Town, and since then, not a year has passed without at least two Little Theatre productions. Danville Little Theatre has always been comprised of a diverse slice of the Danville community. Professors, office workers, carpenters, newsmen, business owners and even the occasional postal worker have trod the boards for DLT. In the beginning, DLT relied on many staples of American and British theatre, such as Arsenic and Old Lace and Ten Little Indians. Later, DLT began to experiment with plays that carried broader emotional tones, such as Tennessee Williams’ Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. Today, DLT presents a widely varied mix of serious drama, light comedy, classics and farce. DLT has worked its magic over most of the past 52 years without the benefit of a home stage. Many plays have been produced in the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History, but other settings have been used as well, including Averett College, the Danville Wednesday Club, Danville City Auditorium, George Washington High School, Danville Community College, Mount Hermon Courtyard Theatre, and Stratford Inn Conference Center. In December, 2005, The Little Theatre of Danville, Inc. produced its first play in the renovated North Theatre in Danville. This venue promises to be home to many more DLT productions in the coming years. |
